Who qualify for Sassa

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers a variety of grants, each with specific qualification criteria. Here’s an overview of who qualifies for each type of SASSA grant:

1. Older Person’s Grant (Old Age Pension)

Eligibility Criteria:

Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
Be 60 years or older.
Must meet the means test (income and asset threshold).
Cannot receive financial support from a state institution.

2. Disability Grant

Eligibility Criteria:

Must be between 18 and 59 years old.
Certified by a medical practitioner as being permanently or temporarily disabled.
Must meet the means test.
Must not be receiving care or financial support from a state institution.

3. Child Support Grant

Eligibility Criteria:

For primary caregivers of children under 18 years old.
The caregiver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
The household income must fall below the means test threshold.
Both caregiver and child must reside in South Africa.

4. Foster Child Grant

Eligibility Criteria:

The child must be placed in foster care through a court order.
The caregiver must provide the court order when applying.
No means test is applied.

5. Care Dependency Grant

Eligibility Criteria:

For caregivers of children with severe disabilities.
The child must be under 18 years old.
A medical assessment must confirm the severity of the disability.
Both caregiver and child must meet the means test.

6. Grant-in-Aid

Eligibility Criteria:

For individuals already receiving an older person’s, disability, or war veteran’s grant.
The person must require full-time care from another person.

7. War Veteran’s Grant

Eligibility Criteria:

Must have served in World War II or the Korean War.
Be 60 years or older, or disabled.
Must meet the means test.

8. Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant

Eligibility Criteria:

Provided for temporary financial aid in times of crisis, such as unemployment, disasters, or health crises.
Applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.
For the COVID-19 SRD grant, individuals must be unemployed and not receiving any other income or grant.

General Requirements Across All Grants:

Provide valid South African identification documents.
Submit proof of income, residency, and other required documents as per the grant type.
Pass the means test (for applicable grants).
