In other to access and manage the Sassa social grant in its simplicity, the government of SA in partnership with a South African technology company has developed an App called Govchat. The Sassa GovChat app is a mobile application designed to render assistance to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries to access and manage their social grants easily. The app was developed in partnership with GovChat, a South African-based technology company, and was launched in 2020.
GovChat enhances governance transparency and accountability through the provision of tools for citizens to measure service levels, combined with technology and empirical data analytics for government to improve them. GovChat gives every South African the power to participate in improving the lives of all citizens. The app has been designed for desktop computers as well as smartphones. GovChat makes it simple for citizens to play an active part in governance whilst on the go.
Any smartphone with an internet connection can use the Govchat app, which is free to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Beneficiaries will be able to handle their grants more easily without physically visiting SASSA offices, notably during the pandemic. As South Africa’s official citizen-government engagement platform GovChat provides the first standardised system to govern how information from all 257 municipalities in South Africa is escalated.

Thousands of people living in South Africa currently depend on Sassa grants to make a living. The grants are distributed by the SA Social Security Agency to buy goods and services. Sassa will start the disbursement of funds to beneficiaries on February 2nd 2024 through to April 30th.

Creating An Account On Sassa Govchat App
To have an account on Govchat you will need to create one by following the process below:
- Download and install the GovChat app on your mobile device by connecting the device to the internet.
- Open the app and click on the “Sign up” button.
- Enter your cell phone number and click on the “Next” button.
- You will receive an OTP (one-time password) via SMS. Enter the OTP in the space provided and click on the “Verify” button.
- Once your phone number is verified, you will be prompted to create a profile. Enter your name, surname, and email address, and create a password.
- Agree to the terms and conditions, and click on the “Sign up” button.
- Your account will be created, and you will be taken to the GovChat dashboard.
