Students can now use the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to apply for NSFAS bursaries if they plan to attend a public university or college in 2024. (NSFAS). Students can get loans and scholarships from the government-run NSFAS to assist them enroll in TVET colleges or any of the 26 public universities. Students from homes with a certain level of income can only be admitted through NSFAS. If a student qualifies for financing under the National Student Aid Scheme for 2023, they must submit their applications before the deadline. (NSFAS). NSFAS Open in 2023
For 2024, NSFAS applications are now being accepted. Send your NSFAS financing application before September 28, 2022. The current deadline for applications is January 31 for 2023. Since late submissions won’t be allowed, be sure to submit your application before the deadline.
Required Documents For NSFAS Applications
The following papers must be in certified copy form and cannot be older than three months. Your documentation needs to be certified by the South African Police Service or the South African Post Office. This also applies if you are under the age of 18 or over the age of 18 but STILL DEPENDENT on the joint household income of your parents or guardians:
- a certified copy of your South African ID or birth certificate. If you are under 18, you must provide a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate.
- 16 years old and without a smart ID card or green bar-coded ID.
- IDs for the parents or guardians (death certificate)
- IDs for the parents or guardians (death certificate if applicable)
- IDs for each person living in your house
- Paystubs or appointment letters are acceptable forms of proof for your parent or guardian’s or your own annual household income if you are working. (This is true for all types of employment or income for all household members, including any income from SASSA grants, Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), or any retirement, life, disability, or other benefits paid as a lump sum or in monthly installments.)
- a certified copy of your most recent exam results or transcript. (If you’re in Grade 12 right now, you don’t need to submit this.)
- Registrar’s records from the university (if applicable)
- Travel and lodging paperwork (if applicable)
- Download the consent form, fill it out, and have everyone whose income has been disclosed in the application sign it.

Who Can Receive NSFAS Funding
To qualify for bursaries, applicants must adhere to four fundamental standards;
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2023 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
What Is Funded by NSFAS
If your application is accepted, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme will help you pay for certain study-related costs.
- Accommodation
- transport, a budget for books, and a living allowance
- Allowance for personal expenses or incidentals
- However, if you are a student at the University of South Africa (UNISA), NSFAS will pay the price of the educational packages that are indicated below.

NSFAS Allowances 2023
The following allowances are provided to students by NSFAS:
Allowance for personal care
Every NSFAS-funded student receives a personal allowance worth R2,900 annually.
Transport Compensation
You qualify for the transport allowance and will get R7 350 per year if you reside less than 40 kilometers from the college.
Allowance for lodging
Students who reside in private housing more than 40 kilometers from the college should:
- R15 750 is awarded to rural students each year.
- Per-urban area students are given R18,900 annually.
- Urban residents who attend school are given R25 200 annually.
- They receive an annual housing stipend of R33 000 while living in the college’s dormitories.
