Do you need money to attend a higher education institution? Utilize the NSFAS to submit a bursary application. This article has been created to give readers the information they need. For students who lack the funds to pay for their education and are unable to obtain bank loans, study loans, or other forms of financial aid, the Department of Higher Education and Training supports the NSFAS bursary program.

This NSFAS program also benefits disabled students. Students with disabilities who require financial assistance and possess the academic capacity to thrive in their academic fields can apply for the NSFAS Disability Bursary Program. By providing students with disabilities with the extra training and support they require to overcome learning barriers, it hopes to enhance access to higher education. What NSFAS Bursaries Cover

these are the things that NSFAS bursaries cover at colleges and universities

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
  • As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, of 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Who Qualifies For NSFAS Funding

To be eligible for bursaries applicant must meet these basic principles;

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2024 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

If you have a disability, you must complete Annexures A and B and attach proof of disability and a quotation for assistive devices with the application form.

How Do I Apply Online For NSFAS

Application for NSFAS Account Funding:

  • Create an online account with myNSFAS, or update an existing one.
  • Check out www.nsfas.org.za
  • Go to the “myNSFAS” tab.
  • Select “Register”
  • Check the box to let NSFAS to validate your information.
  • then type your ID number as it appears on your South African Identity Document in the form (ID)
  • Enter your full name and last name according to your ID number.
  • Put your current email address here.
  • Validate your email address.
  • Enter your mobile phone number.
  • Set up a password.
  • Verify password
  • upload a copy of your ID
  • Select “Register”
  • An OTP will be issued to the entered email and mobile number (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
  • Enter the OTP and press “Submit”
  • You have now completed your re-registration
  • Click the APPLY tab to be directed to the online application form.

 

Required Documents For NSFAS Applications

The following papers must be in certified copy form and cannot be older than three months. Your documentation needs to be certified by the South African Police Service or the South African Post Office. This also applies if you are under the age of 18 or over the age of 18 but STILL DEPENDENT on the joint household income of your parents or guardians:

a legitimate copy of your birth certificate or South African ID. You must present a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate if you are under 16 years old and do not have a green bar-coded ID or smart ID card.

  • IDs for the parents or guardians (death certificate)
  • IDs for the parents or guardians (death certificate if applicable)
  • IDs for each person living in your house
  • If you are working, you may include your pay stubs or appointment letters as evidence of your own or your parent’s or guardian’s annual household income. (This applies to all forms of income for all family members, including grants from SASSA, Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and retirement, life, disability, or other benefits received in a single payment or over the course of a year.)
  • a certified copy of your most recent transcript or set of test results. (If you’re currently in Grade 12, you don’t have to turn this in.)
  • records from the university’s registrar (if applicable)
  • travel and lodging documentation (if applicable)
  • Download the consent form, complete it, and have each applicant who has declared income sign it.
  • If you have a disability, download and complete the Disability Annexure A

NSFAS Bursary Closing Date

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The application deadline for NSFAS 2024 has been extended to Friday, January 21, 2024. The earlier cutoff date was Friday, January 7, 2024.
