The National Student Financial Aid Scheme now accepts online applications from students who need financial aid (NSFAS). This financial aid helps students with their tuition and other living costs after their enrollment in the program has been approved.

Nafas Online Application date

On September 28, 2022, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) online application process opened. The last day to submit an online application is January 31, 2023. Applicants for financial aid should submit their paperwork as soon as feasible.

Who qualify for the Nsfas bursary program

You are qualified for an NSFAS bursary if you are a citizen of South Africa, want to enroll in or are already enrolled in a public university or TVET college, and satisfy the conditions listed below.

Nsfas Online Application Requirements

The conditions that students must meet are as follows:

What the student must provide as part of the NSFAS application process

In order to complete your application, verify the required supporting documents, and ensure you have all the necessary information, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will require additional information from you:

Following are the prerequisites that students must fulfill:

  1. Those who have received an SASSA grant,
  2. those with disabilities, persons whose yearly household income is less than R600 000,
  3. and university students whose studies began before 2018 and whose yearly family income is less than R122 000 are all eligible.
  4. Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, click here to download
  5. An applicant who is recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form, click here to download.

Documents needed from Applicants when Applying Nsfas

The applicant is required to submit the documents indicated below.

  • a certified copy of your South African ID or birth certificate. If you are under 16 years old and do not have a green bar-coded ID or smart ID card, you must present a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate.
  • IDs for the parents or guardians (death certificate if applicable)
  • IDs for each member of the household In the form of a paystub or appointment letter, your parents, legal guardian, or you, if you are working, must demonstrate your household’s annual income. (This is true for all jobs or sources of income for each household member.) The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), grants from the SASSA, and any lump-sum or monthly payments of retirement, life, disability, or other benefits are also included in this.)
  • an official copy of your most recent test results or transcript. (If you are currently enrolled in Grade 12, you are exempt from submitting this.)
  • records from the registrar of the university (if applicable)
  • documentation for lodging and travel
  • proof that you are married
  • Download and complete the consent form and fill it in with signatures of all people whose incomes have been declared in the application.
  • If you have a disability, download and complete the Disability Annexure A Form

How to Apply for Nsfas Funding Online

  1. Kindly register online as a user on myNSFAS or re-register a myNSFAS account
    • Go to www.nsfas.org.za
    • Click on “myNSFAS” tab
    • Click on “Register
    • Tick the box to allow NSFAS to verify your details
    • Then enter your ID number on the field as it is stated on your South African Identity Document (ID)
    • Type in your full names and surname as per your ID number
    • Type in your current email address
    • Confirm your email address
    • Type in your cellphone number
    • Create a password
    • Confirm password
    • Upload your ID Copy
    • Click on register
    • An OTP will be sent to the email and cell number provided (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
    • Type in the OTP and click submit
    • You have now completed your re-registration
  2. Please click on the APPLY tab to be directed to the online application form.
