The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is implemented with the Ministry of Finance’s approval in accordance with app-section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004). The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is intended for South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and special permit holders who are 18 to 60 years old have insufficient means, do not receive social grants on their own behalf, are not eligible for or do not contribute to the UIF payment, and have no other financial support.

The South African Social Security Agency Grant Relief of Distress (SRD) is a temporary grant that was introduced by the SA government to provide financial assistance to individuals who have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and other national disasters and tragedies. The grant is intended to provide relief to those who are unemployed and do not receive any form of a social grant or unemployment insurance benefits.

SASSA SRD grant is paid monthly and provides eligible applicants with a fixed amount of money for a period of six months. The grant is intended to help individuals meet their basic needs during these challenging times and support them until they are able to find sustainable employment.

It is required that you frequently check the Sassa official website or social media sites for updates on when the application period will begin if you plan to apply for the SASSA SRD programme in 2024 or 2025. Sassa receives applications for the Srd grants every month of the year, therefore apply as early as possible in other to receive the grant in your preferred month.

Sassa Grant Srd Eligibility

To apply for the SASSA Grant Relief of Distress (SRD), you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • You must be above the age of 18 years old.
  • You must be unemployed or not receiving any form of income or social grant.
  • You must not be receiving any form of UIF or any other government-funded assistance.
  • You must not be receiving any form of income, salary, or stipend.
  • You must not be in receipt of any other government funding such as NSFAS, Funza Lushaka, or other government-funded scholarships.
  • Your household income must be below the threshold of R3,500 per month.
  • You must have a valid South African ID.

To apply for the SRD grant for the year 2024/2025, you will need to provide the following documentation and information:

  • You will need to provide your valid South African ID number.
  • You will need to provide your bank account details so that the grant can be paid directly into your account. If you do not have a bank account, you can open one with a local bank.
  • You will need to provide proof of income or lack thereof, such as a bank statement or payslip.
  • You will need to provide proof of unemployment, such as a letter from your previous employer or a UIF declaration form.
  • You will need to provide your contact details, including your phone number and address.
  • You will need to provide proof of residence, such as a utility bill or rental agreement.

There are numerous ways to apply for the SASSA Grant Relief of Distress (SRD):

To Apply Online

  • You can apply for the SRD grant online by visiting the official SASSA website (www.sassa.gov.za). You will need to create an account and complete the online application form.

 Applying Via WhatsApp

  • You can also apply for the SRD grant via WhatsApp by sending the word “COVID” to 082 046 8553. You will then be prompted to provide your ID number, bank account details, and other required information.

Email application

  • You can send an email to SRD@sassa.gov.za and request an application form. You will need to complete the form and attach all required documentation.

SMS application  Method

  • You can send an SMS to 082 046 8553 and request an application form. You will then be sent an application form that you can complete and return via email or post.

Apply By Visiting SASSA Office

  • If you are unable to apply online or via other electronic means, you can visit your nearest SASSA office to apply in person. You will need to bring all required documentation with you.
  • It is important to note that you can only apply for the SRD grant once. If you have already received the grant, you will not be able to apply again.
