Sassa Old Age Grant Application
The Older Persons Grant (also called the old age pension grant) is a payment from the government of South Africa, for citizens of South Africa over the age of 60 years. The value of the Older Persons Grant changes each year at the moment it is R1 990 per person, per month, for people below 75 years old and R2 010 per person, per month, for people over 75 years old. These amounts are as of October 2022 the amount will be revised again in April 2023
Sassa social grants are awarded based on a means test. A means test is a way of evaluating an applicant’s income and assets, to determine whether they qualify for a grant or not. To pass the means test, single applicants must not earn more than R92 520 a year, while married applicants must not earn more than a combined income of R185 040 a year (this amount is as of October 2022).
The application form is available at the SASSA office and must be completed in the presence of a SASSA officer. A SASSA officer will be able to assist you or your appointed person, to complete the application form if you or they are unable to do so. After the application form has been completed in full, you will receive a dated stamped receipt, with the name of the SASSA official who assisted in your application. You will need to keep your receipt as proof of application.

Application for the Sassa old age grant is open each month and payments are also made each month. The grant applicants must reconfirm their grant applications at least once every 3 months.

Sassa Old Age Grant Application Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
- The applicant and child must be residents of South Africa.
- Must not be less than 60 years.
- The applicant must not be in receipt of another social grant for him or herself.
- The applicant and spouse must comply with the means test.
- The applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
- The applicant must submit a 13-digit bar-coded identity document.
Sassa Old Age Grant Application Procedure
If you are a South African citizen or permanent resident who has reached the age of 60 and older, you may be eligible for the Old Age Grant provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). Here are the steps to apply for the SASSA Old Age Grant:
Gather the required documents:
You will need to have the following documents ready before starting the application process:
- Your South African ID or proof of residence if you are a permanent resident
- Proof of income, such as a pension statement or a bank statement
- If you are married, your spouse’s ID or proof of residence
Visit your nearest SASSA office:
- You will need to go to your nearest SASSA office to apply in person. You can find your nearest office by visiting the SASSA website or calling the SASSA toll-free number at 0800 60 10 11.
Complete the application form:
- A SASSA official will give you an application form to complete. Make sure you fill in all the required information and attach all the necessary documents.
Submit your application:
- Once you have completed the application form and attached all the required documents, submit it to the SASSA official. They will give you a receipt to confirm that your application has been received.
Wait for the outcome of your application:
- SASSA will review your application and notify you of the outcome. This process can take up to three months. If your application is successful, you will start receiving your grant payments.

Note: If you are unable to go to a SASSA office in person, you can ask a family member or friend to apply on your behalf. Alternatively, you can request a home visit from a SASSA official.
