In reaction to the spread of COVID-19, SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) launched the R350 grant.  This grant was created to help temporarily those who are out of work and not getting any other social assistance or income.  Applications for the R350 grant are accepted online and via WhatsApp.

In order to apply online for the SASSA R350 grant in 2024, you will need both an operational cellphone number and a current South African ID number. To complete the online application form, go to the SASSA website and follow the instructions. Once your application has been filed, you will receive an SMS with a reference number that you may use to check on the status of your application.

As an alternative, you can submit your application over WhatsApp by texting “SASSA” to 082 0468 553.  You will be guided through the application process by a chatbot.
