The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is intended for South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and special permit holders who are 18 to 60 years old have insufficient means, do not receive social grants on their own behalf, are not eligible for or do not contribute to the UIF payment, and have no other financial support.  The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) is administered in terms of section 32 of the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004) and is implemented with the concurrence of the Minister of Finance.
If your July status is approved and has a Payment date, your options have expanded to collect the funds at the Merchant /Retail stores: Checkers, Usave, Shoprite, Pick ‘n Pay and Boxer When going to a retail outlet to access the funds, clients must have their identity documents and cellphone with access to the number they registered with when applying for the grant a withdrawal confirmation message will be sent to the registered number that was used on the application.

Application for the Sassa R350 grant can be done by following the steps below:

  • Make sure that you have a valid South African ID number and an active cellphone number.
  • Log on to the SASSA website and click on the “COVID-19 SRD” link on the homepage.
  • Follow the process and complete the online application form.
  • Once you have submitted your application successfully, you will receive an SMS with a reference number.
  • You can then use the reference number to track the outcome of your application.
  • Alternatively, you can apply through WhatsApp by sending the word “SASSA” to 082 0468 553. A chatbot will guide you through the application process.
  • It’s important to note that the eligibility criteria for the R350 grant may change when the application process reopens.
