Types Of Sassa Grants
SASSA offers various types of grants to provide financial assistance to eligible individuals and households in South Africa. Here are the main types of grants:
1. Child Support Grant (CSG)
- For caregivers of children under 18 years old.
- Means-tested: income thresholds apply based on the caregiver’s financial situation.
2. Older Person’s Grant (Old Age Pension)
- For individuals aged 60 and older.
- Means-tested: applicants must meet specific income and asset criteria.
- Additional “Grant-in-Aid” available for those who need full-time care due to health conditions.
3. Disability Grant
- For individuals with a disability that prevents them from working for a period of six months or more.
- Means-tested.
- Temporary or permanent, depending on the nature of the disability.
4. Foster Child Grant
- For foster parents caring for children placed in their custody by the court.
- Not means-tested.
5. Care Dependency Grant
- For caregivers of children under 18 years old who have a severe disability and require full-time care.
- Means-tested.
6. Grant-in-Aid
- Additional assistance for recipients of the Older Person’s, Disability, or War Veteran’s Grant who need full-time care.
7. War Veteran’s Grant
- For individuals who served in World War II or the Korean War and are 60 years or older, or disabled.
- Means-tested.
8. Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant
- Temporary assistance for individuals in desperate need who cannot meet their family’s most basic needs.
- Includes the COVID-19 SRD grant for unemployed individuals without any source of income.
